Explaining the Frame.io V4 Zapier app
The Frame.io V4 Zapier app allows you to build custom workflows connected with thousands of other apps. These workflows are called Zaps, and they allow you to create your own automations suited to your workflow.
Zaps are designed around the if this, then that concept, meaning when this happens, then do that thing. Zaps are a series of nodes, starting with a trigger followed by actions. The trigger is listening for a specific event to take place or specific conditions to be met — once the trigger finds what it's looking for, it performs the actions in the series one by one.
For example, you can set up a workflow that triggers when a comment is made on an asset in Frame.io and then sends a message in Slack notifying your team that a comment was left. When Frame.io tells Zapier a comment was made, the Zap is triggered. It goes to the next node, which is a Slack node, and will send a message to a specified Slack channel saying a comment was made and what the text of the comment was. You could even add further actions, like an Airtable node that updates a database of assets with the new comment.
This is just one example, but Zapier can even work the other way. A Zap could listen to a trigger from another app and then make something happen on Frame.io. Zapier connects to almost 8000 other apps, making the workflow and automation possibilities nearly endless.
Here's how you get started with Frame.io in Zapier.
What you'll need
An active Zapier account
A Frame.io V4 account (if you were a legacy customer, you will need to make sure your Frame.io ID and Adobe ID are linked)
Getting Started
Zapier is a third-party platform, and so you will first need a Zapier account. A basic Zapier account is free. Once you're logged in, you can either create a new Zap (by clicking the orange + Create button) or edit an existing one (by clicking on Zaps in the sidebar and navigating to the Zap you want to edit).
Add a new trigger or action to your Zap and search for Frame.io V4. Frame.io (Legacy) will not work with V4 accounts and Frame.io V4 will not work with Frame.io (Legacy) accounts. Selecting the Frame.io app will now add it to that trigger or action.
Select your trigger or action and select an event. For triggers, this will be what the Zap is listening for. For example, if you select "Comment Created", the Zap will trigger when a comment is left in your specified Workspace. For actions, this will be what the action does. For example, if you select "Create Comment", it will leave a comment (from you) on a specified asset.
Next, you need to authorize Zapier to access your Frame.io accounts on your behalf. Under Account, select + Connect a New Account or select an existing one if necessary. Log in with your credentials and select Allow Access.
Frame.io and Zapier are now connected and you can start building! Each trigger and action can be configured under the Configure tab of each node in your Zap. If you're unfamiliar with Zapier, feel free to explore their documentation on building workflows available here.
Troubleshooting
My Zap fails to run and can't access my Frame.io account
Make sure your Frame.io ID and Adobe ID are linked. This is necessary for the Frame.io Zapier app to communicate with your Frame.io accounts. To learn more, check out our article on Connecting to Adobe Authentication.
What does "experimental" mean next to some of the available events?
Events that are marked as "experimental" are still being worked on. Their behavior may change as they're developed, but they will eventually move out of the experimental stage and into stable release. If you're building critical workflows, it is recommended to avoid any experimental events.
What's the difference between the Frame.io (Legacy) and Frame.io V4 Zapier apps?
The Frame.io (Legacy) Zapier app will only work with Frame.io (Legacy) accounts, and the Frame.io V4 Zapier app will only work with Frame.io V4 accounts.
Can I mix and match Frame.io (Legacy) and Frame.io V4 Zapier apps?
You won't be able to locate Frame.io (Legacy) accounts in the Frame.io V4 Zapier app, and you won't be able to find Frame.io V4 accounts in the Frame.io (Legacy) Zapier app. However, you can have a Frame.io (Legacy) trigger and a Frame.io V4 action (or vice versa) in the same Zap. Note that you will need to log in and authenticate to each one separately.
I can't find my account in the account list
The Frame.io V4 Zapier app will only work with Frame.io V4 accounts. Confirm that the account you're trying to access has been updated to Frame.io V4. For Frame.io Legacy accounts, you can use the Frame.io (Legacy) Zapier app.
If you still can't find it, make sure you've logged into the correct Adobe Profile. Adobe IDs can have access to multiple Adobe Profiles, which may determine which Frame.io accounts you have access to. If you need to change profiles, use the Account field to connect a new account and select the correct profile.
Why can't I see my actual data when testing triggers?
Zapier doesn't create the necessary Frame.io webhooks until you publish your Zap. In order to make sure you have all the information you need to test your Zap, we provide sample data for you to use or the trigger may find some actual files in your account to use.
