Digital Rights Management (DRM)

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is supported for Enterprise Prime accounts only. Reach out to your Sales or Customer Success rep if you're interested in utilizing this feature.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) protects your video content by ensuring it can only be accessed by authorized users in secure, controlled viewing environments.

On Frame.io, DRM prevents screen grabs and screen recordings by automatically blacking out the video player and playback frames when capture attempts are detected, keeping your media private and secure at all times.

You can apply DRM settings at the Account, Workspace, and Share levels, giving you flexible control over how content is protected both internally and externally.

Account Settings

To apply DRM security to newly created Workspace and Shares, Content Admins can go to the Content Security tab in your Settings and you will see two options in the Digital Rights Management Security section.

Default on Internal Playback is how you can apply DRM to all your video assets inside your account to anyone who has access to them.

The default setting is set to all role types except for Content Admins & Owners, which will be displayed as Multiple Roles. This can also be any combination of roles selected for more granular control, all the way up to Everyone. Single roles can be selected as well. If all roles are deselected, the settings will toggle off.

Default on All Share Links is how you can apply DRM to all your externally shared video assets going forward.

Because there are Share restrictions on certain user roles, the roles available are limited to Content Admins & Owners, Full Access Members, and Edit & Share Members. The default role for this setting is applied to Content Admins & Owners. If all roles are deselected, the settings will be listed as No One, which means this setting is required on every Share and no one has the ability to turn this option off when creating a new Share Link (see Shares below).

Workspace

To enforce DRM security on the Workspace level, go to your Workspace Settings for any Workspace and scroll to the Digital Rights Management section.

The same DRM settings in your Account Settings apply to all new Workspaces, but they can be customized at the Workspace level to meet specific security needs. Workspace-level settings override Account.

Note: Only Content Admins can adjust these settings.

Shares

In order to apply DRM security on your Share Links, you'll need to create a new Share Link and adjust the Digital Rights Management setting in the Security section. The toggle will turn on or off DRM for this Share Link. If the Workspace setting for Shares is already applied, this setting will be locked toggled on and will not be adjustable.

Note: With DRM applied to playback, some user roles can still download original video files. Downloading permissions will still be based on the role permissions given to the user within the account. Watermarking will still be applied if enabled. Additionally, if downloads are enabled on Shares, downloads will bypass DRM and allow for original files to be downloaded.
