Frame.io Labs

Written by Jared

Frame.io Labs is where you get early access to features we're still testing — and where your feedback helps decide what ships next.

What is Frame.io Labs?

Labs is an opt-in program that gives you access to early access feature features before they're released to everyone.

Your usage and feedback directly shape the product. A Labs feature has three possible outcomes:

  1. It graduates into a full Frame.io release.

  2. It iterates and continues to develop.

  3. It gets retired.

Labs is the earliest point at which a Frame.io feature reaches real customers. It's a deliberate step before a full release — a way to test ideas and co-create with the Frame.io community.

What to expect

Labs features are different from the rest of Frame.io. Before opting in, here's what you should know:

  • They're early. Labs features may have rough edges, missing functionality, or unexpected behavior. They're stable enough to use in real work, but not held to the same reliability and polish bar as the rest of the product.

  • Labs features may change or go away. Every Labs feature is experimental. A feature you rely on today may be significantly changed or removed in the future. Frame.io reserves the right to discontinue Labs features at any time, though when possible we'll provide enrolled accounts with 14–30 days advance notice before access ends. They may change or go away.

  • Opting in does not guarantee the feature will ship. Labs are experiments. While some eventually become part of Frame.io, others help us learn and may never be released more broadly.

  • Access is controlled by account admins. Only an account admin can enable or disable Labs features. Once a lab is enabled, everyone in the account can use it.

Note: Labs features are free to use during the experiment window and available on all plan types — Free, Pro, Team, and Enterprise.

Accent Color for Folders

Color-code your folders to organize projects the way your team thinks. Assign a color to any folder from the folder menu — it applies immediately for everyone in the account.

When this lab is enabled, you can right-click any folder in Frame.io and assign it one of six colors. The color appears on the folder icon, giving you a quick visual cue to scan and orient yourself within your project structure — no need to read every folder name. If you use color tags in macOS Finder to navigate your files at a glance, this works the same way.

This is especially useful in projects with deep or complex folder hierarchies where a color system maps to your team's workflow — by status, type, department, or however you organize.

How to enable Labs (for account admins)

  1. Go to Account Settings.

  2. Select Labs from the left navigation.

  3. Browse the available Labs. Each one includes a short description and what we're trying to learn.

  4. Toggle on any lab you'd like to try. The first time you enable a lab, you'll be prompted to accept the Labs pre-release agreement on behalf of your account.

  5. Once enabled, the feature becomes available to everyone in your account immediately.

You can disable a lab at any time from the same screen.

Note: If you're on an Enterprise plan, note that some accounts have activation agreements (30, 60, or 90 days) that govern when new features can be enabled by default. Labs features are off by default — admins must actively turn them on. If you have questions about your account's terms, contact your account manager.

How to disable a Lab

  1. Go to Account Settings > Labs.

  2. Find the lab you want to turn off.

  3. Toggle it off. You'll have the option to share why — that feedback is one of the most useful signals we get.

Disabling a lab removes access for everyone in your account immediately. Any data created while the lab was active (folders, generated assets, chat history) is retained according to the terms communicated at time of sunset.

If you're not an account admin

You can't enable Labs features yourself — but you can ask your account admin to turn one on.
Active Labs on your account will appear with a Labs badge so you always know when you're using an experimental feature versus the standard Frame.io experience. If there's a lab you want to try, point your admin to Account Settings > Labs.

The Labs badge

Every Labs feature is marked with a distinct Labs badge wherever it appears in Frame.io. Its job is to make sure you always know when you're using an experimental feature.

Giving feedback

The goal of Labs is to gather feedback. We collect it a few ways:

  • In-product prompts — short, focused questions that appear at key moments while using a feature

  • Usage signals — how often the feature is used and whether people stick with it

  • Research conversations — direct interviews and surveys for some experiments

When you disable a lab, you'll be asked why. That's one of the most useful signals we receive.

When a lab ends

If a feature is being removed:

  • Enrolled accounts receive notice 14–30 days before access ends

  • A final prompt for feedback appears during that window

  • After access ends, the feature shows a "This lab has ended" state for 30 days before being removed from the interface entirely

If a feature graduates, it transitions out of Labs and into the standard Frame.io product. The Labs badge goes away, and the feature continues to work as you've been using it.
