Transitioning from Workfront Proof to the Frame.io Viewer

What to know before, during, and after your Transition to Frame.io

If your organization is upgrading to the Workfront V2 SKU, you will notice that the review and approval experience has changed. Workfront Proof (ProofHQ) is no longer the primary review surface for new projects — it has been replaced by the Frame.io, a professional-grade review tool built for creative teams.

This article explains what’s changed and how to get up and running confidently with reviewing in Frame.io.

Quick Summary

  • Review and approval leveraging Frame.io is included at no additional cost Workfront V2 licenses. Customers with Frame.io Enterprise will benefit from fully unified creative work-in-progress assets and collaboration. See LINK to learn more.

  • Content in Workfront Proof is NOT deleted — your existing proof projects and history remain accessible.

  • You are in control of the transition to Frame.io. Once enabled, new documents and projects will use Frame.io for reviews by default.

  • Some Proof features work differently or are not yet available in Frame.io — read on for details.

What’s changed

The review surface

The most visible change is where review and approval feedback is captured. Your stakeholders will now be taken to review in Frame.io instead of Proof. Your stakeholders will notice a new look and feel to the viewer, but most of the core functionality remains the same.

Overview of key features:

See more information on these topics, click the links above or scroll below...

Making approval decisions

Approvers will see the option to make an approval decision in the Frame.io viewer. The options for approval will be to select Approved, Needs Work, or to leave No response.

Clicking the "Approvers" button will open a modal showing details of the other approvers for that asset.

Video Playback

Playback Speeds

While viewing your clip, click the "1x" icon on the video player to open different playback rates. By default, the playback will start at 1x or Normal, but adjusting the slider to the right will speed up the playback rate by 0.05x iterations, all the way up to 1.75x. Adjusting the slider to the left will slow down the playback rate by 0.05x iterations, all the way down to 0.25x.

You may also adjust playback speeds by using keyboard shortcuts.

JKL shortcuts follow standard NLE behavior:
(J) to rewind 2x,4x,8x
(K) pause/play a video
(L) fast forward 2x,4x,8x
A visual signifier of your current speed will be displayed on your video each time you use a shortcut.

Quickly toggle to fullscreen mode with the (F) key. JKL is also available while in fullscreen mode; however, you won’t see the visual signifiers if you switch your playback speed.

Playback Resolution

To adjust the playback resolution, click the Gear icon in the bottom right corner and select “Quality”. The available resolutions is dependent on the original files resolution and your plan.

Pro plans and higher will support 4K playback.

Loop Playback

Working on short clips? Select “Loop” to play continuously.

Player Frame Guides

If your content will be viewed across various formats, you can use the frame guides to see what your asset would look like in different aspect ratios. Click the "Gear" icon and select "Guides". Toggling "Mask" on will hide anything outside of the guide.

The guides only impact the playback of your file and won’t alter the downloaded or uploaded file in Frame.io.

Setting the thumbnail

Change the asset thumbnail by clicking on the file name at the top of the page and choosing “Set Frame as Thumb”. This will will select the current frame as the thumbnail for the asset when viewed in the project, share and collection.

Color Profiles

Frame.io uses exclusively an RGB display system, which is currently optimized for the sRGB standard employed by macOS and other laptop and desktop computers, or the Rec.709 or HDR presentation enabled by iOS.

Users can upload a CMYK asset to Frame.io and Frame.io will convert it to RGB using the AdobeRGB1998 ICC profile. If the asset does not embed an ICC profile for print preview, USWebCoatedSWOP will be used.
