C2C: ZOOM F10max MultiTrack Field Recorder QuickStart Guide

How to set up your ZOOM F10max MultiTrack Field Recorder to work with Frame.io C2C

Written by Aaron Burns

The ZOOM F10max is a multitrack field audio recorder with built-in Wi-Fi. With Frame.io Camera to Cloud (C2C), it uploads WAV (BWF) files directly into your Project. The F10max supports progressive upload, so each take uploads as you're recording.

C2C is currently enabled on the following ZOOM recorders:`

  • ZOOM F10max [link TBD] (firmware version 1.10 or later)

Use this guide to quickly set up your ZOOM F10max for C2C with settings recommended by Frame.io.

What you'll need

  • A ZOOM F10max (see above)

  • One or two SD cards inserted in the SD1 and SD2 slots

  • A Wi-Fi network with internet access (WPA2 password-protected or open). The F10max connects over Wi-Fi only and has no Ethernet port.

  • Access to Frame.io or the Frame.io iOS app

  • A Frame.io Project

Setup

You can operate the F10max with the touchscreen or the Select Knob (turn to move, press to confirm). Wherever this guide says "select," either method works. To go back one screen, tap < or press the MENU key.

  1. Press and hold the POWER key for one second to turn on the F10max.

  2. The first time you power on, the unit walks you through Language, Date Format, and Set Date/Time. Set the current date and time, then select Enter. The F10max needs the correct date and time to connect to your Project.

  3. On the HOME screen, press the MENU key and select Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. Select the Wi-Fi row to set it to On.

  4. Scroll down and select Wi-Fi Setup. Choose your network from the list, enter the password with the on-screen keyboard, and select Enter. Conn appears next to the network once you're connected. The F10max saves this network and reconnects automatically the next time it powers on.

  5. Go back to Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and select Frame.io, then select Pair. The F10max displays a six-digit pairing code, a QR code, and the time remaining before the code expires.

  6. In Frame.io on the web or in the iOS app, navigate to or create the Project you would like to upload to. Follow the pairing instructions in our Getting Started Guide to connect your device to that Project. If the code expires, select New Code on the F10max to generate a new one.

  7. Pairing is complete when your Project name appears at the top of the F10max's Frame.io screen.

  8. On the Frame.io screen, make sure Auto Upload is set to ON. This lets the F10max upload every take automatically.

  9. Press the DISPLAY key to return to the HOME screen, then press REC to start recording. With progressive upload, your take uploads as you're recording, and the rest uploads as soon as you press STOP.

  10. You can also upload takes manually, such as takes recorded while Auto Upload was OFF. Press the MENU key, select FINDER, and open SD1. Recordings are stored in date folders. Press and hold a file or folder (or press and hold the Select Knob), select Upload to Frame.io, and then select Yes. To remove an item from the upload queue, choose Cancel Upload to Frame.io from the same list.

  11. To connect your F10max to a different Frame.io Project, select Log out on the Frame.io screen, then select Yes. Select Pair to generate a new six-digit code and, using the instructions in our Getting Started Guide, enter this code into the new Project.

Reading the Frame.io screen

Line

What it shows

1

Your Project name and connection status (Online, Offline, or Paused)

2

Your Frame.io user name, Wi-Fi signal strength (dBm), and upload speed (MB/s) while uploading

3

The file currently uploading and its progress

4

Remaining: the number and size of files waiting to upload

5

Complete: files uploaded. Failed: files that couldn't upload (shown in red)

On the HOME screen, a bar under the Wi-Fi icon shows overall upload progress. Blue means uploading, and orange means the device is paused in your Frame.io Project.

Troubleshooting

My F10max won't connect or upload

First, make sure your local network has internet access and that the F10max is connected to it. Look for Conn next to your network in MENU > Wi-Fi/Bluetooth > Wi-Fi Setup. If you see "Connection failed," the password may be wrong. Select OK and select the network again.

See our Internet Connection Guide for more information.

Finally, make sure the F10max's date and time are correct. The unit can't communicate with Frame.io if the date and time are incorrect.

I see "Turn Wi-Fi on first."

Wi-Fi is off. Go to MENU > Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and select the Wi-Fi row to set it to On.

Every take shows up in my Project twice

By default, the F10max records to both SD cards, and it uploads the files from both. If you only need one copy in your Project, record to a single SD card.

My files aren't uploading

Check the following on the Frame.io screen:

  • Auto Upload is set to ON. Takes recorded while it's OFF won't upload automatically, but you can upload them from FINDER (see step 10 above).

  • The connection status isn't Paused. If it is, resume the device in your Frame.io Project. Takes recorded before the pause keep uploading, but takes recorded while the device was paused won't upload automatically. Upload those from FINDER.

  • If Failed shows one or more files, select Retry Failed to upload them again.

My files are taking a long time to upload

The F10max uploads one file at a time so recording always gets priority. New takes join the queue and upload in the order they were recorded. In ZOOM's testing, typical upload speed is about 0.5 MB/s (4 Mbps) on a 5 GHz network. For the best speeds, connect to a 5 GHz network and keep a strong signal (check the dBm reading on the Frame.io screen).

You can also set Auto Upload to OFF and manually upload only the takes you need.

What happens if I lose my network connection or power?

Your uploads pick up where they left off. If the network drops, the F10max shows Offline and "Waiting to upload," keeps its queue, and reconnects automatically when the network returns. If the power goes out, the F10max reconnects to your saved Wi-Fi network after restarting, stays paired, and resumes the upload from the part that was already sent.

Can I switch Wi-Fi networks without pairing again?

Yes. Select a different network in Wi-Fi Setup and uploads continue without pairing again.

Can I use a mesh Wi-Fi network?

Yes. When a mesh system moves the F10max to a different access point, the connection drops for a few seconds. Uploads resume automatically once the F10max reconnects.

Can I use Ethernet or a static IP address?

No. The F10max connects over Wi-Fi only and gets its IP address automatically (DHCP) on every network.

I see "Not added (the queue holds up to 200 files)"

The upload queue can only hold up to 200 files. Wait for some files to finish uploading, then add the remaining files from FINDER again.

I see "Disconnected from Frame.io"

Someone removed the F10max from your Frame.io Project. Select OK, then go to MENU > Wi-Fi/Bluetooth > Frame.io and select Pair to pair it again.

My upload queue cleared after I changed Projects

When you change the F10max's connected Project in Frame.io, uploads waiting for the previous Project are canceled. To send those files to the new Project, upload them again from FINDER.

Do my files stay on the SD card after uploading?

Yes. The F10max uploads a copy of each recording, and the original stays on your SD card.

Is timecode included in the uploaded files?

Yes. Each uploaded WAV file includes the start timecode in the BWF bext chunk (TimeReference) and in iXML metadata.
