Frame.io offers the ability to upload interactive HTML files as .zip files or live web URLs for review and approval.
Common use cases include:
HTML animations
Ads with streaming video or audio
Interactive banners
Web page review
Requirements
In order for an archived HTML package to be properly detected on Frame.io, it needs to meet these requirements:
The archive is capable of being unpacked (no passwords, must pass virus scan, etc.)
The archive contains nested directories at a maximum of 5.
The archive contains fewer than 100 files total.
The archive contains fewer than 100 directories total.
The archive is less than 500 MB in size.
The archive does NOT contain exe/dmg file types or another archive.
Each HTML file is < 10MB.
Once unpacked, there is at least one HTML file (extension HTML or HTM) in the root directory. If there is only one directory at the root level (no files or other directories), that directory is considered the root.
Note: In cases where there are multiple HTML files, it will determine which is the first to load into the viewer in this order.
index.html/htm
default.html/htm
main.html/htm
...alpha order by filename
Uploading and viewing .zip HTML files
If an HTML file is detected in a .zip file upload, a prompt will appear asking to convert the HTML into interactive web assets. If kept as a .zip, it will not have review and approval access, though you can convert it as interactive after the upload though options. This file can still be organized, shared, and downloaded on Frame.io. Allow some time for all of the files to be recognized as an interactive file as they upload.
Click the tick at the bottom to bypass this prompt and allow for all .zip folders to deliver interactive files. It can be later managed from the Workspace settings as well.
Note: To interact with your HTML file, you must upload it packaged inside of a .zip file. Uploading an HTML file on its own will be delivered as a static image/PDF. The .zip file must also contain at least one HTML file at the root folder level to be offered the option to convert it as interactive.
Click on Yes and the file will change from pink to green with a new Interactive tag in the thumbnail. Once the thumbnail changes to the HTML image, your file is finished processing and can be opened.
Viewing Interactive HTML
The left column will show all available HTML files to interact with. Click on any page to load the HTML page or image.
The viewer will show your interactive HTML, allowing you to scroll through, view animations, and click URL links. Clicking on an external URL link will prompt a message and open a new tab in your browser. Use the zoom options to adjust your view of the HTML. Resolution can also be adjusted to resize and change the view of your interactive HTML.
Reviews can be made as regular static comments on the HTML page, with annotations, or as anchor comments to leave notes directly on the page. The anchor comment icon can be found next to the Settings cog at the bottom of the viewer. Comments will show which HTML page is being referenced in the comment card as well as resolution info.
Adding and viewing live web URLs
To add a web URL for review, click the + button and select Add Web Review.
Enter a valid URL starting with https:// (e.g. https://www.example.com).
The web URL will be added to your project just like any other asset. You’ll be able to share it and perform asset operations as usual such as rename, delete, move, copy.
Viewing live web URLs
The viewer will show your web URL, allowing you to scroll through the page, view animations, and click on links to other pages. Clicking on an external URL link will prompt a message and open a new tab in your browser.
Use the zoom options to adjust your view of the HTML. Resolution can be adjusted to resize and change the view of your interactive HTML.
You can also use the arrows to navigate between pages or refresh the URL.
Comments can be made as regular static comments, with annotations, or as anchor comments to leave notes directly on the page. The anchor comment icon can be found next to the Settings cog at the bottom of the viewer.
Comments will show the URL at the time the comment was made as well as the resolution info for the page.
Browser extension for enhanced annotations
For enhanced annotations, download the Frame.io Chrome Browser Extension. When installed, you can choose to capture a screenshot of the current state of the URL that will be uploaded with your comment. The Browser Extension is also necessary to view certain private and restricted URLs.
You can also choose to set a Thumbnail for your asset.
Without the browser extension installed, capabilities will be limited to general comments and annotations, without the ability to capture a fixed state of the page.
What types of URLs are supported?
URLs are supported if the site allows iFrame embeddings
Private web URLs are supported but certain authentication flows may not work depending on server configuration.
Note: URLs from the following sites are not currently supported due to degraded viewing experience when embedded:
YouTube
Figma
Configuring allowed redirect domains
Admins can configure an allowlist of domains that the web URL viewer is allowed to redirect to. This can allow private sites to load that require a redirect for the authentication process, and other use cases where a redirect is critical to complete the review of the URL. Configure this setting via the Content Security Settings Page in your Frame.io account.
